Some parents and students even think, they know by default what is good for them and their children and decisions are taken based on aspirations of either parents or one of the most successful person in extended family or acquaintances. We wish if it was this simple.
With education counseling for students gaining ground, we as counselors realize with every passing day that the situation is actually grave than we had imagined it to be. Parents and Students are taking decision as a family about the child’s future in a haphazard way without realizing that this decision can be the make or break event for the rest of their lives. In many countries and societies, counseling as a word is considered a taboo because it is connected in your sub conscious mind with mental illness, bad behavior and emotional imbalances. What needs to be understood is that counseling has a proactive dimension also, which is preventive in nature, making sure that the children wanting to make decisions about their stream of education and future career must be handled from an early age and clear cut path to the career must be on paper with steps defined merged with timelines, available as a blueprint to the family.

There is a famous saying, “Do not reinvent the wheel”? This in terms of the guidance for students translates into the situation where a student or a family makes a decision after Grade 12 about the choice of stream, college etc. not involving any scientific guidance mechanisms. This may or may not end up being a mistake with the student realizing during his studies that he is not enjoying it and not being able to relate it to his favorite topics and areas of interest. With the situation absolutely unspeakable by now, most of the students choose to go with the flow worried about the time wasted, money spent and social existence. Grade 8- 10
This is the phase of the life of a student where he / she begins to wonder what their future would look like and they start imagining a rough picture or even pictures about their future career and lifestyle. One day the students wants to be a doctor, next week an engineer, army officer in a month and sometimes sliding being a chef somewhere. There is uncertainty when it comes to fixing on one of these options.
Suddenly, an uncle, an aunt or a cousin walks in and rubs the topic under the carpet saying it is too early to think about all these things.
But what this expert did not tell you is that to get into esteemed colleges and universities there is more to be presented than academic score. The evaluation besides the academic score includes co-curricular achievements, extra-curricular events and participation, creative work, competitions like Olympiad, debates, MUNs and many more. The profile build up starts from Grade 8 and revs up in Grade 9 & 10.
So, in case you are indecisive about your child’s career footprint and the options are getting considered in Grade 11 or 12, we assure you that you have missed the bus and your child’s application will have to reply on academic score, essay writing and interview. The weightage of non-academic items remains unchecked and misses the evaluation.
Grade 11-12
The adolescence has kicked in by now and the hormones are the catalysts of changed chemical reactions in the body giving the child a newer, energetic way of life. By the time you are in college, although the stream you select remains your best choice and most favored topic but in the last 5-7 years, starting from Grade 8 to Graduation, a lot has moved on in terms of the industrial applicability. In early 2000s, a B Tech Mechanical was good enough to land a good job with likes of L&T, Punj Lloyd, Gammon India etc. and then came a time in around 2005, B Tech was combined with MBA to club the technical knowledge with management skills. Currently, the industry is moving towards Master’s degree acceptance with micro specialization. You need expert guidance as to which specialization will be valid and preferred for the coming 10-15 years at least, observing the trends of the market and relating to that. Today Mechanical B tech is getting clubbed with automation, robotics, mechatronics, Nano engineering and many more and evolving by the minutes.
